There are times
when a new technology will cause the rules of the game to be rewritten.
The jet engine, the semi-conductor, and composite materials are just a
few examples. Though the impact isn't quite on the same scale, the Tiagra
has rewritten the rules of big game fishing.
The overriding rule of big game fishing is that these tough animals are capable of fighting for hours, repeatedly making long runs that can heat up a drag. This heat causes the drag setting to change, making the chances of landing a fish slimmer. This rewrites the rule on heat as it Shimano Hydrothermal Drag System automatically compensates for heat to keep the original drag setting intact. What's more, the Tiagra's pre-lubricated graphite drag washer's operation is impervious to saltwater and starts smoothly.
Another major rule of big game fishing is that between a 400lb. Marlin pulling on one end, and the leverage created by an angler in a fighting chair on the other, a lot of force is placed on the tackle. That is why Tiagra's one piece frame is machine cut right out of an aluminium tube. It's also why Tiagra has four shielded stainless steel ball bearings, heavy duty stainless steel gears, and a two speed shifting mechanism where the pinion and drive gears are continuously engaged.
A more subtle rule of this sport is that it should be done with class. The Tiagra certainly does that. The large handle knob is counterweighted so that it always rests in an easy to grab vertical position. The unique preset knob has detents with approximately 1/2 pound increments for easy adjustment. At 89 decibels the super loud clicker is the loudest found on any production reel. And coming soon is the all new TI-130

The Shimano Hydrothermal Drag (SHD) is the latest in the evolution of
big salt water drags. Regardless of the drag material used, the heat of
the drag system caused by a hard running gamefish will cause original drag
setting to vary . Traditionally, this variance has even as much as 150%.
The Shimano Hydrothermal Drag system compensates for the effects of heat
to within 10% of the original drag setting.
Shimano reels employing(Tiagra) the new drag
system all have graphite drag washers. Graphite washers are used because,
(1) Water has very little effect on their operation, (2) Graphite is excellent
for obtaining a wide range of drag settings and (3) These lubricated washers
require very little start up inertia. When temperature increases, drag
pressure decrease with a graphite washer. The heart of system is a special
oil filled piston that expands to apply additional pressure against the
drag plate to compensate for the decrease in pressure by a hot graphite
drag washer.
Found on Tiagra. This preset knob has a built in click mechanism that increase the drag pressure at strike approximately ½ pound of every click. This knob however, was created as a reference to aid the user in setting the drag. It is not a substitute for a scale. To properly set the drag, place the reel on a rod, run the line through the rod’s guides, attach a scale to the end of the line, and pull against the line with the rod loaded. You will find the calibrated know makes the task much quicker.
The Tiagra and the TLD's have been designed with Shimano's exclusive push button two speed shifting mechanism. We designed this mechanism so that gearing changes can be made quickly and easily accomplished while fighting fish. The pinion and drive gears are always engaged . They require no gear meshing manouvers while shifting. The low gear ration (for high power retrieves) is selected by pushing the button at the base of the handle. Return to high speed gear ratio is done by sliding the release button along the handle.
Aluminium, XT-7 and Graphite Titanium body materials are used in Shimano saltwater reels. Each material has it’s own special features that make it more suited to a particular application.
Did you ever spool up your reel, only immediately to have to unspool it because you forgot to put the bolts for the rod clamp assembly first? Or did you find your reel awkward to transport because the bolts from this assembly stuck out and got in the way? Well we’re happy to say that this is a difficulty of the past. Our new Tiagra rod clamp assembly has bolts that can be quickly and easily attached or unattached regardless of the amount in the spool. The difference is that the bolt heads have been trimmed. Simply put these trimmed heads into the reel foot opening and turn them 90 degrees to put them in place.
